The pad of Benson’s thumb wiped one of the tears aside, tracing gently over the sharp edge of Randy’s cheekbone. There was a gentleness there, and Randy couldn’t help but close his eyes at the sensation of it. He sighed out, something small and quivering. He almost wanted to press his face into Benson’s rough palm, for all the warmth it promised. Randy was so cold and scared, and Benson was steady. He might be the steadiest thing in Randy’s whole world.
It all came back to him: the smell of dirty fryer oil, of moldy food, of bleach solution, of smoke lingering in the air. The image of blood and viscera, bone fragments and torn muscle sliding down into the mop bucket, the marbled trail of blood over dirty linoleum—
“Hey, Randy, c’mon.” Benson was speaking soft and low, “None of that shit. Open your eyes.”

Benson had folded his arms up in front of him, casual. Nonchalant. Leaned his hip back against the reception desk and spoke, “Well, Randy. I don’t work on nervous people. They get jumpy under the needle and fuck up the art, and it's a waste of everyone's time. Can’t really trust ‘em to sit well while I’m working.”
