Summary
In a fantasy world where everyone is named for a prominent trait, a vice or virtue, likeminded people band together to form communities and shape their world. Virtues, those with names like Might, Optimism, and Determination, strive for peace and justice. Vices, on the other hand—Rage, Vengeance, Decay—usually seek the opposite. On occasion, especially in moments of crisis, a Virtue may shift to their corresponding Vice—Tenderness to Violence—and become an entirely different person. As Vices and Virtues clash and vie for power, individuals find themselves caught in the struggle and forced to choose sides.
Surrender is the youngest son of a powerful king, Rage. He lives confined within the castle walls, but finds solace in secret trips into the forest. One night, he encounters a pair of travelers, Ambition and Valor, who, intrigued by his odd behavior, follow him back to the castle. Rage captures them and informs his son that they will be executed in the morning. Forced to stand up to his father and rescue his new friends, Surrender overcomes his fears and faces Rage as Perseverance. He, Ambition, and Valor, now enemies of the king, set off on a journey certain to change them forever.
