There are things that always happen, no matter how hard he tries: El doesn’t arrive in time. Eddie dies. Max is put in a coma.
Steve fails. They lose.
“Steve, how many loops have you been through?”
His head is nodding, and his eyes are watery, and Eddie has approached him like a spooked animal.
“I lost count.”

Summary

K is still trying on gender labels – they thought maybe genderfluid at first, but increasingly the word that feels best is just ‘enby,’ and the tenuous vague fuckery it evokes – but they do know they don’t hate their body. Most of the time, dysphoria isn’t an issue. They have a handle on their weird bullshit princess transformation. They control it now, most of the time. So it’s fine.
But that doesn’t mean they like it when their Transfiguration professor tells the class that their next lesson will involve performing magic on each other. And that the kind of magic they’ll be performing, so no one really gets hurt, is a spell to amplify one’s natural magic, to manifest it physically in their body. No, K definitely doesn’t like that. And neither does the rest of the pilot program.
A school assignment dredges up uncomfortable feelings for K. Luckily, they have an amazing support system in place.
