Carlos can tell he doesn’t feel good, worn out from the earlier tests and overwhelmed by it all. He leans forward, gripping the blanket between his fingers and holding it up just enough to peek at TK curled up underneath. He smiles at him in hopes that it still brings him comfort the way it used to, the little one he receives in return leaves hope tattooed on his ribcage and expanding with each breath. “I’ll do my best, okay?”

“Please go,” comes on a strained whisper, the air of it sour with tactfully placed lies leaving Carlos to step over the threshold instead. TK’s knuckles turn white around the lip of the counter, arms trembling under the weight of the pretense of it all.
