Summary
There is a leather bound journal that sits hidden under Charles’ bed in the dormitory he’s been assigned. It is a small thing, packed full of writing from his almost full year within the ranks of the cult. Written within, in as graphic detail as he could stomach, is exactly what goes on within the walls of the Van der Linde cult property.
It is meant to become damning evidence for when (and it is when, not if) they manage to bring the black eyed demon in front of a court of law.
But because misfortune follows Charles Smith like a cartoon cloud, what it ends up being is the very reason why the whole investigation – and the whole compound with it – goes up in flames so spectacular that it makes international news.

Summary
The packet of cigarettes is open and extended between them both, bridging the gap between where they are now and that place where Arthur goes that makes his eyes look green instead of blue.
Charles takes one and lights it with the zippo he keeps in his pocket. He likes the noise it makes, bright and metallic. Clink, and then a flame is brought to the end of his borrowed cigarette.
A soft drag, and he leans heavily against the support that keeps their back porch standing. Arthur now only has 8 left in his pack, which means soon enough he will have to obtain more. But that’s not something either of them wants to think about right now.“It’s Perseids season.”
