She knew... things. Little updates on their lives, bits and pieces that trickled her way. Like how Hotch just signed divorce papers—JJ made sure she heard about that one. And she also knew he'd been dating so many women lately that the team was struggling to keep track.
Monica, Giana, Anne, and one named Emily who lasted all of two weeks. Emily was, understandably, disappointed that that was all the time an Emily got in Hotch's fresh-out-of-marriage phase. Emily never pegged Hotch as the type for rebound sex—or anything in that realm, really. Then again, she never thought he'd remarry either, and yet he did.
Maybe she doesn't know him as well as she thought. Not anymore.

“Thank you,” she says softly. She turns to meet his eyes, trying to make him understand that she means thank you for all of it. For putting so much on the line to keep her safe, knowing the pain it was going to cause. For visiting her in the hospital every moment he could, sitting in the quiet with her when neither of them knew what to say. For never asking her what the hell she was thinking going after Doyle alone with flashbang grenades and automatic weapons while the team tried to build a profile she already knew by heart.
“It’s alright,” he says. “Just let me drive you to the hotel, and promise me you’ll call tomorrow.”
Something squeezes tight in her chest when she realises he’s honestly worried this will be the last he sees of her. Tighter, when she realises it’s something she could do – she could run. She has a bag full of cash and two other identities that are still clean. Her heart races briefly with the possibility. It would be so easy compared to this mess.
“Emily,” he says. “Promise me.”
