Neil rolled over and stared up at the ceiling. He’d get to play exy, eat regularly, and sleep somewhere with heating- presumably. Not a bad way to spend his last months. And hey, maybe his mother would come back from the dead and kill him herself if he went to Palmetto. Little victories.
What if Neil gave up completely on making it through the year when he went to palmetto? What if Neil just did not give a single fuck? Maybe things would turn out better.

Summary
After he was released from witness protection Neil settled down in a big city, hoping he could fade into one of the many faces in the crowd. Neil had been living in the city for a little over five years. He hardly ventured out of his apartment except for his early morning run, grocery or supply run, to his store, and occasional trip to get a coffee from the cafe next to the antique store. It was a simple, somewhat lonely life, but that was not new for Neil. The years after his mother’s death passed in a painful grey blur, brought slightly into focus with his art, and his routine.
Or a story where Neil is lonely until he is not.

The batch of horses that had been brought in were wicked, so there was no chance for a lucky draw. As the crowd itched for the fourth ride, the announcer spluttered. “Tonight, the next boy out of the gate is a rookie. Tonight’s his first ride under these lights,” He doubled back again, staring at his script as Dan nodded. “From out East in Maryland, make some noise for Neil Josten on Lady Macbeth.”

Neil Josten is running. He leaves Maryland with nothing but a pickup truck and a duffel bag. Neil finds himself stranded in Western Montana, and enters a rodeo competition on a whim. Suddenly, he’s offered somewhere to stay. A place to hide from his past.
