Summary
Veritas Ratio is not a man to be trifled with. He is also not a man whose feathers can be ruffled easily. But Aventurine - that gambler - manages to get under Ratio's skin with just a smile. With just one lilting “Doctor”, Ratio is riled up and it annoys the academic in the man at how much he enjoys it, when every sensible bone in his body should loathe it.
And today is no different.
His phone will not stop buzzing and after the first couple of messages, Ratio decides against checking them, focussing instead on the mounds of grading he is yet to complete.
His phone quietens after a while and the man heaves a sigh of relief. That incessant buzzing will not be a distraction now. However, when did he last charge it? Maybe, it's not so much as Aventurine not messaging him but his battery dying. Pinching the bridge of his nose, Ratio picks up his phone and the screen immediately lights up - the icon on the top right indicating 77% charge. So, the messages did indeed stop. Ratio puts the phone back down, the screen facing away from him. Well, that’s good then.

And it is a copy of Aventurine, even if Veritas has his doubts that Caelus has ever met the man. The creature’s shell is the same shade of turquoise as Aventurine’s favorite shirt, and the heavy steel gray of its feet match Aventurine’s prized hat and coat. The spade on the belt wrapped around its tail is an entirely unnecessary additional confirmation.
In the photo, the Aventurine-creature leans sleepily into the Veritas-creature, eyes shut, mouth curled into a familiar self-satisfied smirk. If the image had sound, it would no doubt be purring.
Veritas’ chest tightens at the sight, and he forces himself to scroll away.

The Trailblazer sends Ratio photos of a pair of very bizarre but familiar-looking creations, and maybe Ratio really should have expected what would happen next after saving one as his new wallpaper.
