Maria doesn’t often show up unannounced on Joel’s porch, so when she does, Joel knows it’s about something serious.
“Is that Maria?” Ellie asks incredulously from the kitchen, having seen their unexpected guest through the window even as Joel goes to open the door for his sister-in-law.
Even before she opens her mouth, he knows the news is bad; her face is paler than he’s ever seen it, her jaw tight as she deliberately doesn’t meet his eyes.
“Your girl’s in the hospital,” she says, and his heart stutters to a stop in his chest. “Tommy’s with her.”
[In which Reader gets hurt, Joel does not react well, and not everything is smooth sailing after a happily ever after. Sequel to Cinnamon and Honey, but can be read without if you don't mind no context for Reader.]
