People kept wondering why someone as kind and gentle as him would even be friends with someone as horrid as House in the first place. They would ask him about the threats they believed House had over James to make him stay after all the years of co-dependency with each other and the horrible way House treats him.
The answer he would normally give to them is that he pitied House and thought that maybe the bitter man just needed someone to be his friend. but they can never know that he needs to be needed and House never stops needing him.
