Summary
They find him in the Harkonnen slave pits, while they’re cleaning out Arrakeen.
It’s Stilgar who recognizes him – Stilgar overseeing work bands of Southern radicals as they attempt – messily and with a high margin of error – to separate Harkonnen collaborators from indentured laborers from free smugglers who Paul doesn’t intend to waste time prosecuting for their crimes. Gurney will tell Paul later – with a hint of bewilderment and a stronger hint of self-reproach in his voice, deferential now the way he always was with Paul’s father – that he was mere inches from Duncan when the fundamentalists dragged him unconscious out of the pit, and he didn’t know him. His oldest friend – oldest living friend, at least – and he didn’t know him.
“Starvation, dehydration,” Stilgar muses, in that soft, sideways voice of his, standing with his head bowed just slightly at the edge of the throne room. “These will make a man’s brother into a stranger. We learn to see through such things, in the desert. It is him, Mahdi.”
