Summary
It's not like Phil hadn't considered getting a familiar before. It might be quite beneficial actually. It would provide him more access to higher magic and all of the cool benefits.
Unfortunately, he'd also considered what it would be like to have two fight-hungry beings, and having one of them be a demon was much unneeded.
He hoped to facilitate their meeting and supervise it. That hadn't exactly gone to plan. The old crow needed a nap.

But most familiars tend to find their witches when they least expect it.

This is bad, he needs to go. -- scrambles out of his prone position on the forest floor and his hands flounder out around him, hoping to land some kind of purchase on a nearby tree in order to guide him to safety. The trees will know what to do, they always know what to do.
-- feet pound against the forest ground, soil kicked up haphazardly at every step. He doesn’t know where he’s going, the Evil chasing him has yet to give up, and most of all Wilbur is scared. He doesn’t know why the forest has abandoned him in his weakest moment—because that’s what looks to be most likely. The forest has always been a safe haven for him, but it’s as if it doesn’t want to bother caring for him anymore.

The door slams shut. How. How! How could things have gone so wrong?
Wilbur and Tommy were supposed to be far, far away from Esempe by the time Dream had arrived. The strongest witch in the world would bring in hundreds and hundreds of hunters to anywhere. While the weaker ones don’t stand a chance against him, they would overpower a baby witch such as Wilbur with ease.
Although the witch hunters aren’t a problem at all.
Not when Dream himself is their captor.

Wilbur's heart pounded, and he could feel Tommy's tail twitching at his side. Why would there be a Crow here? They hadn't been enough of a nuisance to merit setting a Crow on them, surely. Right?
Wilbur took a shaky breath, clenching his hand over the hilt of the dagger. Then, he jumped out of his false shadows. He lunged for the Crow, looped one arm around the Crow's neck, and pressed the blade of the knife to his throat.
It was too late to give the knife back now. Now they knew that he and Tommy were up here, they'd be hunted down for thievery and burned for witchcraft. But only if the Crow got out and told everyone about them. -

Tommy looks up in a glare, and— he's flash banged with warm, filling colour.
There's sweet pinks like candyfloss melting on his tongue and firey, assertive reds filling him with a spunk and Determination, green Patience threading through it all like mint.
Tommy's eyes glitter with hunger, and he licks his lips, finally paying attention to what the awkward man above him is saying. He's got his left hand out, pushed up granny glasses (Tommy snickers,) resting on his prominent, scarred nose, almost jittering as he rambles.
"Look, I'm sorry, kid. I didn't mean to knock you over, I swear. Please just take my hand, stop ignorin' me-" The sentence tips up, strangled and higher than Tommy thought big men like this one could go.
"No problem, Big Man! Guess I shoulda been looking where I was going, ay?" and subtly blocking the guy's path. "I'm Tommy Innit, Big Man extraordinaire! You?"
OR: Black Cat Familiar Tommy Innit bumps into Witch Technoblade and decides that's his witch. Forever.

“D-Dad, it hurts.” If he could see, he might get to relish in the shock that was surely flitting across Phil’s face. He knew the man would get flustered if Tommy called him Dad, but he’d been waiting until Phil loved him so the knowledge that he was the only one Phil would call ‘son’ was his.“Oh, oh, hey, hey don’t go to sleep, I know it hurts, Toms, don’t sleep, okay?” Phil’s voice was still panicked and Tommy knew he should listen, he wants to hear Phil worry over him for longer. But the pain was too much, making him want to throw himself in water to cool down. It hurt, he didn’t want to hurt. His eyes fell closed but Phil’s fingers were pushing them open as soon as the cool black was overtaking his vision. He groans. “I know, I know, but you can’t sleep.”

After an accident happens, Phil lets Tommy stay, not knowing that that was Tommy's plan all along. Tommy's just glad that the dad he adopted was always so willing to go along with his plans, but Tommy's plans are seeming to become more and more by the seat of his pants rather than the meticulous ones he'd spent so long preparing for.

“You really don’t have to, and I’m too weak for—hey!” Wilbur swatted at his ear, the Phoenix had just bitten his ear. It let out what Wilbur assumed was a sigh and returned to its nest, leaving its feather by Wilbur.

Summary
Wilbur paused, staring at the building looming in front of him as he tried to work up his courage. It was just class. He should be over this by now. What did it matter that he was the only one of his brothers to still be in the classes? He may not have a familiar but that was okay. He may not have a ton of magic like Techno but he could still make potions or cast simple spells! There were some witches that couldn’t even do that without a familiar.
But… he was still the oldest unbonded witch.
Here he was, seventeen and alone in a classroom of people who knew what his brothers hadn’t admitted yet: that he was a worthless witch and always would be.
Or,
Wilbur struggles with feeling like he's never enough until a series of events teaches him that he is loved, powerful and important.

Summary
It was as if lava had poured down their bond. Both Tommy and Wilbur went down with a scream, desperately trying to cut their bond, but it was too late.
By the time the lava cooled, and all the hunters were taken down, there was no magic to be called upon. As if the lave had turned to bedrock right in their core. As if all of their magic was hidden away behind unbreakable stone.
“Tommy,” Wilbur had gritted, jaw tight and eyes hard with anger. “What did you do?”
Bad luck, the card had said. Bad luck.
Tommy hadn’t proved himself. Tommy had embarrassed himself, Tommy had ruined Wilbur’s magic.
And it was all Tommy's fault.

After a spell leaves Tommy and Wilbur without magic, Tommy takes it upon himself to fix it. But after his solution, Tommy is stuck unwillingly going to alternate realities--of the futures that Wilbur has changed.
When Tommy's memory begins to slip, and he never knows if he's in his reality or a different one, he fights against what's real, what's fake, and what he feels he has to do to make up for his mistake.

Summary
Most people didn’t know this, but magic was a part of everything. There was magic in the plants around them, connecting to the earth as a whole.
For the longest time, this wasn’t commonly known. Sure, one or two people believed it, but it never gained traction. The ideas that magic existed were just ideas.
Until one day.
The day was, surprisingly, unremarkable at first. It started with a man, consumed by the want to control magic. Or prove its existence. Whichever he could accomplish, really.
Though, he had spent years looking over the same information. Anything that was previously recorded by people before him. So he wouldn’t have made any progress if it wasn’t for them.
