Phil wasn't supposed to be home this soon, and there was smoke coming out of the chimney meaning Phil had set up a fire in the living rooms fire place. He only ever did that when-

Nothing could prepare Phil for the sight he saw walking into that hospital room. His little boy lay on an uncomfortable hospital bed, blankets pulled up to his shoulder. Techno lay on his side, eyes drilled into the wall, not even noticing Phil’s arrival.

Wilbur didn’t say anything. He and Tommy were alike in that way: Doubt was built into their bones.
“I couldn’t do what you’re doing, Wilbur. Most people probably couldn’t.”
“They could.” Wilbur sounded so certain. “For Tommy, they could.”
“But have they?”
That question seemed to take Wilbur out at the knees. “They should have,” he said fiercely.
“They should have,” Technoblade agreed. “But a lot of people have let Tommy down.” He squeezed the nape of Wilbur’s neck and the kid leaned into it, his head falling towards Technoblade’s shoulder. “They’ve let you down too.”
Wilbur was quiet.
“Tommy didn’t deserve it. I think we can both agree on that." Technoblade’s voice was soft above Wilbur’s head. "Can we agree on something else too?”
Wilbur hummed unsteadily.
“You didn’t deserve it either.”

They’re at a stalemate.
Phil is sat across from him, the table a barrier between them. It’s protecting them from each other, waiting silently for someone to make a move and ready to stand in the way. Wilbur and Techno aren’t in the house, he wouldn’t want them here for this, when the standoff ends and one of them draws their sword, takes out their gun, says the first word that will damn them both. This is not their battle, not their argument.
Phil’s disappointed because of him, and angry, and fucking pissed, because that’s somehow different though the repercussions are always the same and he ends up shutting himself in his room for the next week to avoid that one disappointed look that all parents have nailed down and-

Phil never lived an exactly conventional life.
That was shown perfectly in his kids. Or as he affectionately called them, ‘The Strays’ because they were kind of strays, but he still loved them as fiercely as if he’d known them their entire life.
But they were chaotic. So bloody chaotic.
