Everything was on fire. Nothing in sight stood taller than her measly frame but that accursed inferno and the taunting shadows it cast.
The shopfronts lining the road were no more and the stalls she frequented with her friends and uncles had their stock as one with the dirt. Little porcelain figures, teacups, bowls; tea leaves and floral wreaths; wooden ladles, board games, pretty little pencil drawings; shattered or trampled or charred, ruined forever.
She wanted so badly to scream at the destruction. Fall to her knees, scream out a prayer, a few curses, and spend the rest of her time on this mortal coil sobbing and dribbling mucus onto her clothes.
She nearly did.

‘I couldn’t tell.’ Vesta gave them an unimpressed look and sat down, as her legs were starting to feel the strain from crouching for so long.
‘I don’t mean to laugh. That sounds terrible, I’m sorry.’ They looked thoughtful for a moment. ‘Though you never did answer my question. Are you a troublemaker?’
‘Aren’t you?’ Vesta glared at them. Alder shook their head. ‘I could never be. I’m a bit too afraid.’
‘My dad says that fear is good.’ Vesta narrowed her eyes. ‘I think its holding everyone back.’
Alder held her gaze. ‘I think both of you are right.’——
