Summary
“He kissed you?!” Eddie growls suddenly. “When?!”
They both freeze at his harshness.
“Uhm… Thursday…”
Eddie clenches his jaw. “Thursday? You mean the Thursday you fucking shoved me to the ground and caused me to sprain my ankle Thursday?!”
Buck stares at him with wide eyes. “Eddie…”
Eddie takes a deep breath. “Sorry… that’s not fair. I know it was an accident…”
Buck looks away ashamed. Eddie notices his face.
“Right?” He questions.
Buck’s eyes fill with tears. “I’m sorry…” he mumbles.
Eddie’s mouth drops open. “You… you did it on purpose?”
“I… I didn’t mean to hurt you…”
Eddie’s eyes darken. “But you meant to shove me to the ground?”
Buck nods.
“Why, Evan?”
Buck sniffles.
“I was jealous…”
Eddie stiffens. “Of him… or of me?”

Summary
“Nothing you need can ever be stupid.” Eddie coaxed, taking Buck’s hand. “Now what’s wrong? Maybe we can fix it together?” That led to Buck wailing again. Eddie just stared, waiting for him to stop. Eventually, the wails dissolved into loud sobs, but Buck still couldn’t say what was making him feel this way. “OK, can you show me?” He asked, his thumb stroking the back of Buck’s hand. Buck nodded, then fished out the container from between his legs. Thrusting it towards Eddie, he managed to force out an “it’s...”, then started sobbing again.
“It’s empty.”

Summary
He hates this city, he hates his apartment, he hates his bed. He hates the traffic on the 405 and all the people that try to cut him off every morning. He hates the sirens that wake him up throughout the night, and the yelling he’s hit with as soon as he steps out of his apartment building every day. Now, Buck is loud, too. He gets excited and talks too loud and too often; he honks at the people cutting him off on the 405, he runs down his hallway when he’s late for work. He fits in perfectly with this city because he is this city. But he can’t do it anymore. He can’t do any of this.

Summary
“You know Daniel died when I was a year old?” Buck spins around to look at Eddie now, who sits up at the end of the bed and watches Buck intently. “They had time. They had a year. They just didn’t give a shit about me,” he continues. “They just didn’t love me.”
Eddie takes a while to respond, and Buck prepares for the worst. He prepares for the reaction people usually have when he’s talking about how his parents neglected him: they did their best, they tried, cut them some slack, they lost a kid. But what about him? What about him, skinning his knees trying to learn to ride a bike and just wanting his mom to give him a hug and patch his wounds? What about him, fourteen and his feelings are so big he doesn’t know what to do and just wants someone to talk him through it? What about Evan Buckley, walking across the stage at graduation and seeing Maddie in the crowd, next to two empty seats?
What about him?
... or, Buck can't move on.

Summary
“You died. You don’t owe anyone anything, and you don’t have to put on this performance just so people think you’re okay.”
“I’ve been doing that my whole life,” Buck laughs it off, but it’s not funny; it’s not funny at all.
“Maybe it’s time to stop.”
Buck agrees. He’s tired, and he wants to stop running, wants to stop performing. He doesn’t know that he’d be able to do it for much longer, anyway. It’s getting so old. “Can I start tomorrow?” he chuckles, and Eddie laughs along with him.
“Yeah, that’s fine.”
... or, Buck stops running, and Eddie's door is open.

Summary
“What are you scared of?” Eddie asks, and he already knows, because he knows Buck better than anybody else in this world. He has the keys to every lock Buck has put on his heart, he’s the one thing that can crack Buck’s armor, the only one that knows the secret entrance to the walls he’s built around himself to hide behind in his worst moments. He knows Buck is scared because Buck wears his fear like a scarlet letter. It’s the one thing he doesn’t know how to hide in the midst of all the horrible because his fear is a cry for help, and Eddie knows all of this. He knows when Buck is crying for help, because he knows how Buck’s fear manifests. It’s in the form of insecurity; of self-doubt, exhaustion and hopelessness. Deflecting his pain, pretending like he’s okay. Buck is scared when he’s acting like he’s the most okay he’s ever been, like nothing bad has ever happened to him.
“I don’t know,” Buck takes a shaky breath. “I’m just scared.”
And Eddie knows that.
... or, Buck is exhausted. And Eddie makes cookies.

Summary
Buck rolls over, returning to his spot at Eddie’s side with his head at the crook of the man’s neck. They lie there for a while, neither of them know how much time goes by; but they don’t care, they’d spend forever in the silence– the peace– they’ve made together. And it’s in this peace that Buck feels the safest; it’s where he feels he’s able to let himself fall apart, all of his darkest parts on display for Eddie to see. And Eddie accepts all of it. “I feel like the only time I think I’m gonna be okay is whenever I’m with you.” Buck cuts through the silence, but in a small voice, like he’s afraid to speak too loud because if he does, then the universe might hear and take this away from him.
“I guess you should stay, then,” Eddie replies, letting his head rest against Buck’s.
And Buck is more than happy to stay. He’ll stay for as long as Eddie wants him.
(Which is forever.
But Eddie isn’t going to tell him that yet.
He’s pretty sure Buck would run away.)
