it’s starting, the earth says again, and you will be there when it does and you will need to tell it what to do, even if it kills you. tommy is changing into soft clothes, sweatpants and his dad’s old tee. no one from school is coming around, and his mother doesn’t have guests over on what they call tommy’s “dirt days.” it’s too risky, because it means the earth is feeling especially communicative, and the earth doesn’t like it when there’s unexpected visitors. tommy pads down the stairs, waving to his mum still on a phone call in the kitchen.

“That I did. They were home, but there were also work emergencies. You know how it is.” Tommy replied, sighing as he looked in the fridge. There was some ham, a moldy tangerine, what remained of a 12 pack of coke, and a couple beers from the last time his parents were here, a couple of weeks ago. If Ranboo was here he would berate Tommy on the lack of spaghetti, he thought as he shut the fridge with a snort.
Tommy's parents aren't really... there. Wilbur notices, and invites Tommy over.

It’s too cold, Tommy thinks as he collapses in an alleyway and pulls his knees to his chest. He just wants his mom, he wants to curl up on the couch with her and watch movies and bake brownies and-
Ow. Tommy winced as something cuts into his back, sharp and hot. He scrabbled to get out from where he had fallen into the brick wall, worrying that something there cut him. What would he do if he got hurt? He couldn’t ask someone for a band aid, that was for babies.
As he felt around his back though, he didn’t feel anything, other than two strips of heat running parallel down his back. Another shot of pain runs through him, and Tommy doubles over as a broken cry bubbles up from his throat.
Tommy gets kicked out because of his hybrid traits, and he grows his wings alone.
