The promise feels simultaneously like some sacred quest and something too hollow. Hermann doesn’t even have a concept of what home could mean to Newt in the current context. He’s certainly not sure if it’s going to be overwhelmingly difficult to achieve. Part of him just wants to get to the hurdle of getting Newt back, they can work on the rest together. They can struggle when it’s the two of them together. They always made more sense as a pair than on their own.

“Yes sir,” he muttered, mutinous, eyes blazing. And Chuck hadn’t had time to process this, hadn’t- he was going to have to drift with Raleigh. He was going to get to—have to—drift with Raleigh. Oh holy hell.
And Raleigh hated the idea. Of course he did, Chuck could hardly expect differently. He himself was pissed, actually, because he didn’t want Raleigh in his head. Chuck might, possibly, be in love with Raleigh Becket, but that didn’t mean he had to like him. And he didn’t. Raleigh was an entitled, self-absorbed ass. Chuck did not want to do this. But, he also didn’t have a choice. What else was new, huh?

“Raleigh, hey,” Tendo said. He looked a little older than Raleigh remembered, a little more haggard, as if Yancy’s death had been hard on him too.
Raleigh looked around. He didn’t usually hallucinate Tendo alone. He’d been Raleigh’s friend yes, but he’d meant more to Yancy—whenever he saw Tendo, these days, it was in the context of Yancy’s memories.
“What’cha looking for, Rals?” Tendo asked, hesitant. Raleigh didn’t bother turning back to face him. Even if it was only a memory, Raleigh always appreciated seeing Yancy. It made him feel like he wasn’t alone, let him pretend for just a moment that everything hadn’t fallen apart.
“Looking for Yance,” he shrugged. “If I’m hallucinating you, he’s gotta be here too.”
“Raleigh. Hey, Ranger. You’re not hallucinating, I’m- I’m really here.”
Raleigh blinked.
“Tendo? You- what- the fuck, man?”

He was already excited, and more than a little touched. This was proof, plain and true—as if Raleigh had needed it—that Charlie viewed him as an actual, proper friend, for all they’d still yet to properly introduce themselves. Someone he wouldn’t give up. And, a little selfishly, Raleigh was glad that he’d been able to put off exchanging names. He wondered if Charls would be tongue-tied, to realise that his self-described best mate was also his hero—was also his maybe soon-to-be boyfriend.
