"Alex, as always, gave his life to protect people but, this time, he saved the life of his own fiancé, putting himself in front of the blade that would hit him square in the back, at a point where there was probably no turning back. They would never have expected a peaceful village to be attacked by barbaric, ferocious marauders in need of blood and torture. It's a good thing they were both there or those people wouldn't have been able to tell any more stories. There were a few casualties, but nothing as important as Alex being hit, especially to save Fionntán. The cleric was disappointed in himself and unusually angry."

Summary
Petra's little brother, Jan, has been kidnapped and is being held at the House of Healing in the former shadow-cursed lands. Petra, Astarion and Shadowheart rush to his rescue, finding a traumatized young man who struggles to cast spells, after years of being taught how to cast like the wizard he isn't. Astarion, noticing that the sweet, quiet young man is very much like some of the victims that haunt him most, finds himself contending with the reality of his past, and the revelation that, in a different life, he could have lured both Jan and Petra to their doom.
