Seishirou snorted, “yeah, that brat has issues. Quite annoying too.”

“Kamui.” Subaru sighed, knowing why this was a shock to Kamui. He glanced at his son and daughter playing in front of him. It seemed they’ll be getting a little one to dote on soon. He hoped his alpha was doing better with Fuuma.
“But I couldn’t,” the younger omega repeated, making Subaru smile tiredly. “These things happen, Kamui. It’s not that uncommon. Maybe the doctor who told you couldn’t have kids was wrong.”

Perhaps then, it can be said that Sumeragi Subaru did finally achieve his dream of being a zookeeper. After all, one needs a zookeeper for all the animals within Tokyo’s urban jungle.
And because the zookeeper Sumeragi Subaru exists, so does his veterinary counterpart, Sakurazuka Seishirou. They are not so different, except the duties of a veterinarian also include putting the animals down.
An interlude: a pause between acts of a play.
Seishirou and Subaru navigate Tokyo in the years between winter '97 to the start of the Promised Year 1999.Takes place after Annex: Snow-Catcher but can be read stand-alone. Trigger warnings for graphic violence and/or extreme kinks/rough sex are added above each individual chapter.

He'd never known anything like it before. The taste of freedom had been sweet, but it only made the fall back to reality hurt that much more. Now Subaru was left wanting, every moment of every day. Death was not the end of something, for the living. It just meant that those feelings no longer had anywhere to go.
In a way, a part of you died when you lost someone. There is a person that you are with them, and them alone. And when they are gone, that version of you ceases to exist. Hokuto took half of Subaru's soul with him, when she died. But Seishirou, too, had died in a sense — the Seishirou he knew and had fallen in love with initially did not exist.
Subaru has a death wish.

“I’m too stunned to…”
Seishirou patiently waited for the rest of the sentence – it never arrived. True to his words Subaru was too stunned to speak. Expected, however that did little to quash last fraction of traitorous doubt. Slightest trace was undignified, Seishirou was determined to cut the chase short for sake of own sanity. “But it is a yes” – that wasn’t a question but a statement.

Shibuya’s Crossing, Ikebukuro’s Sunshine City, Shinjuku’s Godzilla: still the same youthful faces, walking over his wild-torn heart. Survey the scars: death, betrayal, and take each overturned memory, stones gripped so tightly that Subaru’s palms bled from how hard he held on to them.
The smallest details, Subaru knew them all. He’ll practice his pain until each miserable flagellation stops having any meaning. Until one day, Subaru could finally say he felt nothing. He’ll tell that man then, with the same indifference displayed: I don’t hate you, but I don’t love you either, and Subaru would mean every word.
Now Subaru has no wish for anything else. The illusory smile, the deadly smirk. Same thing. Same man. Subaru will find him. Subaru will be the death of them both.
