He settled into a long, loveless marriage with a woman too patient for his bullshit. All because he was a coward. When Stede grabbed the glass encased ship from his bookshelf and slinked off into the night he could finally be proud of himself, he finally did something outside of his comfort zone. The words echo eerily inside Ed’s skull. “Resign”. He feels disconnected from his body, and everything blurs.Ed staggers forward, as if dragged by invisible strings.
Ed clutches Izzy to his chest, hauling him up into his arms. Izzy squaks in indignant surprise.
He finds himself kneeling on the deck, rocking himself and Izzy back and forth. His face is pressed into Izzy's hair, tears soaking into it. “You can’t leave me, mate, you can’t” He hears himself sob.
Izzy’s always been there, by Ed’s side. That’s where he belongs. Izzy’s important to Ed. Izzy’s… Oh.

Summary
Stede finds Ed, Ed finds himself. Izzy gets a chance to heal.
Stede Bonnet has been keeping the lighthouse off of Bridgetown for nearly 2 years, keeping to himself, largely content. One night the worst storm Stede has ever seen rolls across the horizon, bringing a surprise the lighthouse keeper could have never expected.
This fic will have a mix of plot & smut. I will mark the chapters with nsfw content in the chapter title, and any plot important happenings will be summarized in the following chapter. Future chapters may vaguely reference those scenes as well, but won’t be explicit.
Chapters with more triggering content will have a warning at the start of the chapter. Canon-typical violence will not be mentioned in these warnings as it applies to the whole story, so it will come up from time to time.
We will be digging into Izzy Hands, Blackbeard, and Stede's traumas- maybe even some others-
When I tell you this is going to be the fluffiest fluff mixed with the smuttiest smut, with a smattering of good old fashioned trauma. I am not exaggerating in the slightest this shit is a roller-coaster.

One of Edward Teach’s favorite things to do was listen to Stede Bonnet read. Whether that was on the deck in the evenings with the crew around them, or alone in the captain's quarters that they shared, Ed loved it. He loved watching the way Stede would become animated with the story. His face would light up when someone would ask him to read. His lips would always be turned up into a smile as he spoke, his fingers skimming the pages and playing with the corners.
Or...Ed is hopelessly in love with Stede.

Stede nodded encouragingly.
“And these four other squiggly bits together… are also a nine?” Ed eyed him suspiciously, but Stede just nodded with renewed fervour.

Ed’s chest tightens. Stede’s found the answer… And yet he doesn’t seem mad.
He nods his head a little, maybe only twice. It’s all he can manage without the clenchy, shaking fists coming out. He has no idea what Stede’s response will be.
“Oh, that’s okay.” Stede smiles and Ed wasn’t expecting that. “I can’t speak sometimes too. I go silent, just like this.” Ed definitely wasn’t expecting that.

Sometimes Stede just liked to watch him as he read, the interplay of emotions across his face. It was beautiful. He wished he could see inside Ed’s magnificent mind, even if only for a moment. He’d never met anyone he wanted to know more thoroughly than Ed. He’d never met anyone who there seemed to be so much to learn about. He always felt like he was scrambling for whatever little scraps he could find to get a full picture of him, but the whole reality seemed too large and mutable to fully fathom, like the deep, ever-changing sea.
Stede teaches Ed to read and write.

“You’re ridiculous.” Stede huffed, but he put his hand out anyway, because it was Ed, and he couldn’t resist his charms if he tried. “So, is it a deal?”
“I think we have an accord.” Ed grabbed his hand in a firm shake, his calloused palm burning warm. “It’s gonna be fun.”
Sometimes your co-captain teaches you to swordfight and you teach him to read and you don't fall in love even a little.

"I would like to think I know you quite well now, and I did notice," Stede replied, wanting to know what in Heaven would elicit such a furiously startled expression from his friend, but not being brave enough to ask. It was not the goal of this interaction, anyway. "I meant to mention it because I can teach you, if you'd like. Like we've been teaching each other fine things and pirate things."
"You'd do that?" Ed smiled, that excited smile he would give his co-captain, like he wouldn’t believe his luck.
For you? Anything, Stede thought. "Of course! We can start tomorrow if you'd like!" he said instead.Stede offers to teach Ed how to read and write. Despite all the words they learn, there are many left unsaid.
