What Zhongli is greeted with when he opens the door is far from what he was expecting. He thought perhaps he’d be greeted with that usual smile his lover gave him, a quick peck on the cheek and a long rant about work. Just Childe’s usual behavior, chaos and love.
What he sees instead, is a man barely holding himself up on his two feet, an apologetic smile, and blood. Too much of it.

Poetry is the manifestations of the will to encourage... like the battle drums, like the low rumbling before the storm.
Going up and down and back up again… and finally, back down, she mused, was as ridiculous as a game of snakes and ladders. Her mind drifted back to that fleeting moment in her childhood. Aether had sat across from her, giggling madly, his piece now firmly in the lead at the row of squares two above her. He always managed to avoid the snakes! It wasn’t fair! Why was she the only one who slid down and climbed up and did it over and over and over again only for him to keep on the same path, steadily climbing until he won the game!?
A win for me is a win for you, silly sister of mine.
The coo in Aether’s young voice lifted her spirits as it reverberated through her mind. In her memories, he was always joyful, always content, always hopeful. She hoped… no… She wished beyond all wishes that somewhere deep inside, he still held that spark.
“As long as you’re with Venti… As long as you win this game, Aether… I’ll climb to the end. No matter how many times I fall. Without fail.”

The Spiral Abyss is harsh and unforgiving. This is something everyone on the team knows, and something everyone accepts. Only Alhaitham and Nilou remain on the field, fighting for survival. Death is permanent in the abyss, there’s no coming back. And while every teammate works together to protect each other, not everyone can be saved. Maybe this is something Nilou had to learn the hard way.
