Jonah had known for a long time that Lara was deeply unwell.
When he first met her, she was just a normal young graduate student obsessed with archaeology. A little sporty, adventurous, sure, but gentle, kind, and smart too. She seemed so happy, free. A little shy at times, but she always had a smile on her face when her friends were around. While at the time, she was closer to Sam than she was to him at the time, Jonah still considered her a good friend.
The Lara he knew now was a shadow of the woman he had met.
