Summary
His perspective was split between two realities, both equally and simultaneously true.
First: Serph Sheffield was a lying conman who sought to bring nothing short of total destruction to the lives of everybody who opposed him. Heat O'Brien opposed him, so he was caught in the crossfire without hesitation.
Second: Heat O'Brien had, from the beginning, been doomed to destroy every close relationship he had ever had in his life. Serph Sheffield, heartless and cruel as he was, should not have been a surprise to him.
Reality, as it often does, likely lay somewhere between these two extremes.
