    Few Romans would keep an omega as a body slave if they aren’t fucking them, and Esca is young and strong and appealing to the eyes, even if he is not gentle and obedient as omegas should be. Marcus and his uncle could buy half a dozen body slaves with what they would make from selling Esca as a breeder. Having Esca tend to Marcus’s leg makes about as much sense as yoking up a prize-winning thoroughbred to plow the fields. But Esca is Marcus’s thoroughbred, and he will be damned if anyone else can have him.

But the men from the village who fought us - I knew them. Drove their horses. Tested their spears. Both of us had higher callings to answer to, and there is no betrayal in that, but still I remember them."

      He looks back at Esca, face betraying no condescension. "I made many mistakes, did many things I would rather not have, and made one choice I can look back on with pride. It is not such a great thing when you really understand it."

      - (yes rereading this was inspired by the recent thought about jgy and the sca drama he'd love to involve himself with)

      - anyway it's a delightful fic, written by someone who Knows what historical reenactment groups are like. it's exquisitely well drawn and so funny

      - written entirely in the format of emails on the group's listserv

      - includes Marcus/Esca but is about the cast as a whole, really, and I love to see all the different characters making an appearance!

    It took everything in him, but Marcus bit back the scream that threatened to spill. He couldn’t do anything about the way his eyes were tearing up though but Esca held him through it. Something in his hard eyes had softened, and a look of deep sympathy could be garnered through the cracks. There was a sudden scent then, almost like honey or maybe wild apples. He looked up at Esca, saw a warmth lining his irises and a sense of calm overwhelmed him. The sweet scent grew heavier in his mind, dulling out the pain and somewhere in the back of his head he registered it as omega pheromones.

    Or
    Esca reveals himself to be an omega during Marcus' surgery. This will have consequences for the both of them.

There he meets Esca, a second year history student, and feels an immediate and overwhelming attraction - almost an obsession. But Esca's troubled past - in and out of foster care and a young offenders' home - has a strong influence on his attitudes, beliefs and behaviour, causing the path of their connection to be a very rocky one. This is a story about two complex men who are more similar than the other realises and whose beliefs have created a set of self-limitations that each of them struggles to overcome in order to find happiness.
