“Yeah. Hi. One second.” Exer grumbled half-abstently, frowning at what might’ve been his 3rd rummage through his left pocket with no trace of his money.
He really needed a new wallet.
Though his frantic searching was cut short, as his brain finally caught up to him he realised that the cashier had just used his first name. Not only that, but they had spoken in a painfully familiar voice.
With wide eyes, Exer paused and stumbled to find any sensical words. “J-Jackson..? What- what are you doing here man?”

Summary
A fic for a prompt on my tumblr for David finding out Jasper died, then spiraling. He stops eating, stops sleeping, and becomes hyper-protective of the campers, planning relentless amounts of activities and feeling nervous the entire time they do them. Then, he gets sick, but it's not about to stop him. He still takes them on a hike, gives them a swim in the lake, and makes a beautiful bonfire. That's when he finally crashes. :)

“You just watched! You dickhead, you could’ve done something to maybe stop that prick of a know-it-all, but he had to tell everyone that I—“ Max stops himself. His face drops as he suddenly feels heavy. He wipes his eyes again with his sleeve, this time the feeling of being pathetic rocking his core instead. “Oh, what’s the point? Everyone knows now—“
“That’s not true, Max,” David interrupts. He looks down at his boots and sighs heavily. Fidgeting with his watch, David says, “You don’t have to tell anyone anything if you don’t want to. It’s not that you didn’t trust Neil, it’s just that you didn’t want to tell him something. And to him, that might have been his way of assuming that you don’t trust him. But to you, it was just the case of not wanting to tell someone something personal, and that’s okay. You don’t have to tell anyone anything if you don’t want to.”
Max stares at David with an incredibly confused look on his face. “Are you… okay?”
David shrugs. “I don’t know, Max. I just want you to be happy, I guess. You deserve that.”
