Alan Wake era um típico nova iorquino rico que tinha tudo aos seus pés, mulheres, dinheiro, diversão, drogas, bebidas, mas tudo muda quando seu pai falece e ele descobre que o mesmo estava sendo investigado por sonegação de impostos, lavagem de dinheiro, corrupção passiva e fraude, fazendo com que toda a sua fortuna fosse embora como o vento. Sem dinheiro e na casa dos 30 anos, o jovem poeta se vê perdido e desesperado pra recomeçar, encontrando então um anúncio em um jornal de uma casa em nova orleans.
Rose Marigold era uma típica interiorana de Bright Falls, Washington, da terra do cervo e um bom café. As coisas mudam pra jovem de 20 anos quando a lanchonete em que trabalhava é vendida para um casal de imigrantes alemães que querem “modernizar” a região, fazendo com que ela perdesse o emprego e precisasse se mudar, até lembrar que encontra um anuncio de uma casa belíssima em nova orleans.
O que nenhum dos dois sabiam, é que teriam que dividir um casarão em frente a um pântano com fama de ser mau assombrado.

...But what if Rose was like that? What if, instead of the sedative she put in Barry's coffee, she put something else in Alan's, that had a very different effect?
And what if this made Alan very angry?
