Riftan was sure he had time to prepare for his reunion with Maxi after three long years. After all, it was still months away when he was called into yet another pointless campaign. By the time the ship from Nornui docked in the harbor, he would be back home, ready to meet his wife. Imagine his shock when he found out that she had already arrived in Roviden in search of the traces of the elusive dark mages from ages ago.
Regardless of how and why it happened, Riftan absolutely couldn't allow Maxi to travel to the cold, monster-infested North unprotected.

An Elden Ring inspired fanfic because whenever I remember Godfrey coming back to Marika, I just think of Riftan doing whatever he can to get back to Maxi.
Elden Ring characters are mentioned and used in the background, however, I've adapted the lore to work for this quite a lot. -

The city lights shone through the windows, illuminating her from behind and making her shine like a beacon. Her eyes were earnest, honest, something so pure and sweet and wonderful and something only directed at him. It filled his chest and made it hard to breathe, and he basked in the suffocating feeling.
