“You look like you’ve seen a ghost,” Charles mentioned cheerfully as Ashcombe entered the room. The words pulled him from his thoughts, his spine icing over. “What’s haunting you, Richard?”
Ashcombe’s jaw clenched and he willed himself to relax. “Nothing, sire,” he forced out, shrugging the tension from his shoulders. He thought he had gotten over his fear of the ghosts when he was younger, but his trembling fingers told him otherwise.

After spending 2 months on the south coast trying to bring Christopher Rowe and his friends back to London, Ashcombe is ready to step back into the Role of King’s Warden. Only to find when he gets back that a younger woman has stepped in to take his place.
She’s not a bad replacement to Ashcombe’s surprise, she’s fair with a sword, and the knife, and strange enough the bow and arrow. She is quick on her feet and can think very well under pressure. If Ashcombe didn’t know better he’d say that this girl had been trained by him.
What’s even more confounding is that this woman and Charles act as though they have a history. Several years of history, even though Ashcombe would know if the two had ever met before. And he swears that when she looks at him, there’s a knowledge about him that should not be there.
Among the problems with Covenantors and the Raven, and thievery and all the threats to the king and the people he cares for, Ashcombe finds himself looking deep into the newest plaything of the King. Trying to figure out who she is and where she came from.
Only to find the deeper he looks the more questions he has, on her, on the king, and even, dare he think, even on himself.
