When you place a marble on a slanted floor, it will roll along the grain of the wood until it, inevitably, encounters a wall.
In much the same way, Rusty has always known that this would one day happen.
But as he watches Danny pull back, face hidden in the glittering half-darkness around the corner of the Brooklyn Bridge, New Year’s fireworks illuminating him in flashes, it still feels momentous.
Rusty’s treacherous heart is stuttering and he catches himself leaning in for another of those heart-stopping kisses, wanting more, always more.

Until about two weeks ago, no one else had known Rusty was alive, and Rusty had worked very hard (and cried and pleaded with Danny over the whole thing when he really didn’t have to) to keep it that way.
Linus doesn’t know any of this though, so they can’t properly blame him, but that doesn’t stop Rusty from looking irked in the general sense.
