Summary
Not many scourgers find their way into the Dungeon of Penance - they are quite good at what they do, after all, and those who weren't good enough to complete their mission and escape were usually good enough to take a bite into their nightshade capsule sewn into their uniform.
it wasn't every day that the shadowhand got to interrogate a scourger.

Summary
Deirta manufactures an image of domestic peace—her youngest child feigning sleep in her arms as she puts a book away—before the mob bursts into the library. Its circuitous, winding bookshelves buy her enough time for one last spell to modify Essek’s memory, sealing away his recollections of den Thelyss, of Verin and Taldia, of herself.
Verin is spirited out of Rosohna, leaving his younger brother behind, right before the Bright Queen orders den Thelyss to be razed to the ground. When Verin returns, he discovers that there is no one in Rosohna who bears the name Essek den Thelyss. There is only Essek den Kryn.

“This is the best possible decision I could have made,” Leylas says. “It spares my young Shadowhand the potential shame of a scandal he will never be able to live down. Den Thelyss maintains the integrity of their bloodline, and they are assured of an heir worthy of their name.”

“Let’s get it over with,” Essek says. The shudder that wracks his body this time is nothing like pleasure. “Please, just… make it quick.”

Summary
“Issa,” Leylas says. Deirta’s mouth tightens when Leylas calls her by her use-name; the name she had been given when they had been little grubs in the crèche together three centuries ago, children who had not yet known whose souls they carried in their bodies. “What is this about? Speak freely.”
Deirta takes a breath. “This one asks for Her Brilliance’s mercy upon the eldest of her children in this life, he who is named Essek of den Thelyss.”
The silence that falls is so absolute that it rings in Quana’s ears.
