Summary
The winter snows pile up outside the walls of their home, growing taller with each night that passes. They haven’t been going out; the severe weather means that most of the people who Zhang Rishan would be taking a job from are less concerned with trying to capture yaoren, and more concerned with making sure their business ventures aren’t being brought to a standstill by the blizzards.
It’s also why it doesn’t take Zhang Rishan as long to notice Ba Ye’s altered patterns of behaviour as it normally would.

Zhang Rishan blinked up at him confusedly. He was lying on the ground, he realized. When had that happened? Ba Ye knelt beside him, hand on his forehead. As Zhang Rishan watched, bemused, he moved it to his chest, patting Zhang Rishan over.
"What're you—" he slurred, but Ba Ye ignored him completely. After a moment, he let out a startled hiss, fingers pressing against Zhang Rishan's shoulder.
"You've been shot!" Ba Ye said, voice high with alarm.
In which a wartime mission goes south, and Ba Ye and Zhang Rishan must rely on each other to survive while trapped behind enemy lines.

When Ba Ye steps on a slightly-discoloured tile, one of many lining the floors of this room of the tomb, almost indistinguishable from the others, except that it might make someone wonder why that one section of the floor is more weathered than the others, he doesn’t think much of it until there’s a hissing click of something activating, and then he thinks oh no, I’m too young to die!—a frighteningly common thought for him in the days since he’s gotten to know Fo Ye—, and not much else, at least until the breath is suddenly knocked from him as his body finds the floor faster than should be possible under his own power, a stabbing pain flaring at the back of his skull where it cracks painfully against the floor. He blames this for the time it takes him to come to his wits, for being startled to find himself flat on his back with Zhang Rishan over him—well, no actually, Zhang Rishan straddling him, which is a different beast entirely, with how intense his expression is as he stares down at Ba Ye.

“That’s my glass!” the man protests, struggling for a moment, but he’s too drunk to really put up any sort of fight against Zhang Rishan, who’s his physical superior anyway. When he realises he’s not going to win, he lets out a warbling sound of defeat that makes something in Zhang Rishan twist unpleasantly. His hand is gripping Zhang Rishan’s coat, and he gives Zhang Rishan a look of utter betrayal. “Handsome men should have better manners,” he says, “if you’re going to save me, you shouldn’t steal my things right after!”

Zhang Rishan and Qi Tiezui meet when the latter is half out of his mind with drink. This becomes a trend.
