"Heiderich finally managed to shove the door open, and Edward found that the characteristic calmness Heiderich typically brought with him was very noticeably gone.
Heiderich didn’t stay still for a single moment. He closed the door-or intended to. The door only bounced lamely off the door frame, making Edward wince a little. His roommate spared neither the door nor Edward a glance, though, instead having some other goal.
Using the wall as support, Heiderich stumbled to the small base cabinet near the right of the front door. With quiet bewilderment, Edward watched as Heiderich frantically, violently, even, pulled out all of the drawers."

At some point in the springtime, in the middle of a green field on a mission far away from Central, it hits Ed.
It has to be divine retribution, he decides, because at that exact moment, his vision spins, and he lurches forward. Al cries out in surprise, and he splays his massive leather-clad hand across the span of Ed’s back. Ed shudders violently at the contact, and hugs his arms around himself as he breaks into a cold sweat.
“Brother?!” Al asks, panicked and fearful. “What’s wrong!?”
Ed’s not sure, and he fucking hates it. All he knows is that his fever just got infinitely worse, something's causing shivers to run all over his body, he’s making pitiful noises against his will and there’s something wet sliding down his—oh.
Fuck.
—
“Brother, please,” Al says softly, sitting just a few centimeters away. “Tell me no and I’ll leave you alone, but I—I really want to help you feel better.”
Ed doesn’t reply to that. He doesn’t even think. Instead, he lets instinct and nature do what it intended, and spreads his legs.
(Or: Three different times Ed goes into heat, at three different points in time, with three different versions of the same person.)

A look at Ed after everything. After this war and into the next. After he lost Al and saw a shadow of him in Alfons. After he lost himself, and put himself back together, cobbled limbs and broken spirit alike. Held together through spiteful hope and stubbornness.
He went down knuckles bloody and chest caved in and he'll do it all over again. He'll do anything to get back home. But first he has to get back up again.
(Ed learns to live with himself in this unfamiliar world with its familiar faces. He learns to live again.)

"Wait." Alfons tossed the dishtowel on the counter with a frown. "You're telling me, the entire time you've been telling me this story, I was supposed to be picturing him as empty? Like, the armor is walking and moving around with some sort of sentient void inside it?!"
Ed's laugh bubbled out of him, and he clutched at his sides as he doubled over. "What the hell did you think he was filled with? Good intentions? Kittens?"
"I..." Alfons pursed his lips. "I was kinda picturing stuffing. Like a pillow."
