In Greek Mythology, Aphrodite asked Hera and Hecate for help to reveal soulmarks to help find their soulmates for every being in the mortal world and immortals due to her and Hera's domains weakening from the increased divorce rates and finding the wrong soulmate.
That is how the birth of Soulmarks came to be.
However, no one in Ancient Greece knew or recorded that most of the Olympian Gods except for Poseidon, Zeus, Hades and Persephone shared the same soulmate or that they came from the future in a few millennia.

When most people lost a fight, they sulked for a bit, maybe burst into golden monster dust if you were particularly lucky, or just started trying to kill you again if you weren’t.
They did not, in Percy’s (quite considerable, he likes to think) experience, start glowing so brightly that it felt like your retinas would never recover before knocking you sound unconscious.

It just so happens that he can't save himself, Nico stumbles after him in a desperate attempt to rescue before they are both sent plummeting into the abyss. Annabeth is tasked to lead the remaining Seven on the quest to meet the two demigods on the opposite side at the Doors of Death, meanwhile Percy and Nico fight through the perilous hellscape, pain and torture in every direction.
Through hardship, strengthening bonds, and some much needed conversations, Percy and Nico forge a bond stronger than Tartarus itself.
