Summary
As Jay saw the sign plastered in front of bright orange barriers balanced on the sidewalk in front of her normal bus stop, she felt her heart sink into her stomach. The normal overhang she stood under to wait for the bus was partitioned off and the label that signified the bus stop had been removed.
The sign read, in blocky official text: “Closed due to complications with construction, bus stop will be temporarily moved to 5th Ave North and Byers Street”

Summary
Jay's eyelids were heavy and it made it nearly impossible for her to open them once the sun started to peek through the porthole window in their cabin and splay across her pillow. She groaned and stuffed her face underneath the blankets, the throbbing pain of a headache radiating through her skull the moment she became fully aware of her body and how gross she felt.
She felt sticky, sweat rolling down the back of her neck and causing some of her hair to stick to her face, curls flattened and frizzy from tossing and turning all night. She had sweated through her pajamas and the fabric was sticking to her skin, making her feel trapped and confined. She squirmed and tried to kick the blankets off, but at the same time, she shivered.

Summary
The world outside is happy and bright. Spring has finally arrived. If she’s being honest to herself, which she tries to be, spring arrived weeks ago. With every cloud or cold breeze she spotted, she denied the season’s arrival. Each day planted another seed of dread in her stomach that grew to her lungs, her throat, and her brain, and now it was bursting out her mouth. The seasons changing is unavoidable now. Tears well up behind her eyes and she wills them away. Of course, her body doesn’t listen to her. They spill into her pillow, soaking the fabric, and Jay just cries into it more. Chip won’t mind, she thinks.
She doesn’t like spring, and might even go as far as to say she hates the entirety of the season.
She used to, when her biggest concerns were making it to school on time and hiding her dolls from her father.

Spring has finally arrived, and it hurts Jay so much she feels like she can't breathe. Luckily, she has friends looking out for her.

“I can’t,” is all she has to whisper for the conversation to end. To be fair, it had barely begun.
Gill nods quickly, removing his hands from hers, because he’s sweet and loving and selfless and everything she could ever ask for. Everything she could never be. He risks everything just to spend a few moments with her, and Jay just isn’t brave enough to do the same. She’s never been particularly special.
“Sorry, I— that was selfish, I’m, I’m sorry,” He sputters out in a panic, with the fins on his face drawn back and stretched tight.
“Hey, hey, no,” She puts her hand on his cheek, rubbing her thumb against his wet skin gently.

Gillion is a merperson, and Jay is evidently not. There's no easy way for them to be together, except for one, but Jay isn't sure if she can take that leap.

There was a knock on the door to her room which startled her out of the stupor that she had fallen into. Jay blinked, her eyes widening as she wrapped an arm around her chest, sitting up some as water spilled off her form. There was a moment of silence where she tried to decide if she should shout something, or just pretend that she wasn’t in the room at all.
“Jay?” Came a shout from the other side of the door, and Jay sighed through her nose, “You in there?”

The monster kicked up a collection of grass as it moved, slamming Gillion against the trunk of a nearby tree with a sickening thud and held him there. Gillion’s head knocked against the wood, his mouth hanging open with a gasp. His cheeks were flushed a darker shade of blue as he squirmed.

“I’ve actually been enjoying myself greatly,” Jay responded, crossing one leg over the other.
“Humor me,” Chip wrinkled his nose, holding out his hand dramatically.
With a small huff and a roll of her eyes (only to hide the smile that was steadily growing across her face), Jay reached out, placing her hand in Chip’s upturned palm.

It wasn’t often that she even preened her wings, way less often than she should, to keep them neat-looking. But life as a winged pirate served its challenges.
Not to mention she couldn’t reach the backside of her wings at all. The feathers there were out of place and itchy but she couldn’t even see them, let alone fix them. So she had to live with that annoyance, not that it was too big of a deal.

He turned back to the man, who still had not attempted any more advances since Gillion had approached and had just been staring shell-shocked. Gillion pulled his shoulders back, tilting his chin up in what Jay figured was an attempt to make himself bigger than he actually was.
Gillion's lips pulled back in a snarl, sharp, shark-like teeth glaring in the flickering tavern light. His nose wrinkled in a similar way to when he was about to sneeze. But then he did something that Jay had never actually heard him do before. He growled.

Chip pulled back the curtain, dragging Gillion into the square by the hand. Gillion looked nervous, his eyebrows furrowed and his face contorted into a slight grimace.
“I—” Gillion pulled his hand away from Chip, his ears drooped, pinning back against his head, “I wouldn’t want to intrude on what is going on here. This is not at all involving me.”
