“No, you certainly don’t,” Illario says. “You certainly don’t. But I wasn’t saying these things make a job simple. I said the job has a way of simply separating all the parts that make me, Illario. And you are a part. A patch. Of me. The boring patch,” he adds, taking a sip of his coffee and making a face. “Too sweet now.”
“You never know when to stop,” Lucanis says, and he pushes the dish with the sugar cubes just out of Illario’s immediate reach.

Lucanis never complained, and Illario never brought it up, even if in their teenage years he would sometimes catch the expression on his cousin's face when he looked at their grandmother's back – and Illario would be damned if he hadn't recognized hatred somewhere in those dark eyes.
