Summary
“Kaje,” she whispered. “I–”
“I know, Mac.” KJ rested a hand on Mac’s shoulder and gave a light squeeze. “I’m sorry, too. I’m so sorry.”
“You just…left. Without saying anything.”
KJ bit the inside of her cheek and tightened her grip on Mac’s shoulder. “I shouldn’t have. I should have called or stopped by on the way to the airport but I didn’t. Because I was afraid.”
Afraid? Mac nearly scoffed and shook her head. “Afraid of what?”
“Mac.” KJ shook her head and gently pulled on Mac’s shoulder so she would turn around. “Please look at me.”
“I deserve answers, KJ. What you did was so shi–” Mac faced KJ and froze, her anger dying in her throat.
KJ was holding something wrapped in brown paper that looked like a child had wrapped it. The look on her face told Mac that KJ had, in fact, done it herself. It was endearing. It was cute. It was…the nicest thing anyone had ever done for her, and she didn’t even know what it was. Mac looked at KJ curiously and KJ thrust her arms out, shoving the gift into Mac’s arms.
