Summary

“What kind of soup?” Olcott shrugs his duffel bag onto his shoulder again.
Guel opens his mouth to answer, but after going through the ingredients in his head, he decides against it and exhales quietly instead, chuckling. “Itʼll be easier if I just show you.”
“Is it your own recipe?”
Guel nods, a secret smile dressing his face. “A special recipe for the most important man in my life.”
“Is it for me?”
Guel almost feels bad, but he can’t help but snort, smirking softly when he says, “Donʼt push your luck.”

It starts with a cough.
As so many things here on Planet Earth do. Between the pollution stuck beneath the clouds, and the endless lung conditions that hardly even respect seasonality anymore, it’s not really something that invites sympathy as much as…well, these days, only the death of a loved one really still brings a tear to one’s eye.
But it’s only when Olcott remembers that there’s nobody left in the school that he realizes a number of things in succession: the world suddenly feels too quiet. Depending on the damage, they could make off with a couple of Naji’s crops in the back garden. Nobody would still be here to stop them and anyone who does would only give themselves away as opportunistic scavengers.
And Guel Jeturk is coughing again.

The leaden weight on Olcott’s chest shifts, and that’s when he knows that time is up. Though he does appreciate the extra five or so minutes he’s given to flip the page to the next chapter before the hand of the law slips through the crack between the book and his chest, and nudges it out of the way.
He thinks he should be used to it by now, but the clarity of Guel’s blue eyes still draws him in when he layers his hands onto Olcott’s chest and rests his cheek upon it. He’s warm, and his weight is a reassurance.
It’s hard not to smile, given these circumstances. But for the most part, Olcott thinks he succeeds.
“You’re ignoring me,” Guel purrs, looking him in the eye.

“So, since you’re already familiar with what we do, I’ll go ahead and show you this.” She spins her tablet around, causing Olcott to sit up so he can bring his face closer to the letter on the screen. There’s GUND-ARM, Inc’s logo at the top, his name in the greeting—or, well, Donovan Ford’s name—and a message spanning the entire page.
Olcott’s eyes grow wide. “What is this?” He asks that question, but he won’t stop reading and rereading either.
So really, he’s not surprised when Lilique tells him exactly the information he gleaned from her screen: “You’ve been sponsored by a generous donor to receive a full premium package from GUND-ARM, Inc. This includes the preliminary health exam, molding and fitting of your new prosthetics, rehabilitation, as well as room and board for the entire duration of your operation.”
