Meanwhile, Katsura and Ikumatsu must reckon with their growing relationship - and a long-lost friend of Katsura.
Gintoki and Tsukuyo must also acknowledge the past - Gintoki the loss of his best friend and Tsukuyo a shadowy guilt from her past.

The ambience of the restaurant was truly comforting, it felt like someone picked up an izakaya from Edo-period Japan and updated it with some modern tools of an espresso machine, and a cash register. The high chairs near the bar, next to it an assortment of baked goods glowing under the artificial yellow light, on the opposite side, there was a huge bookshelf inside a wall along with small, cozy tables.
Just as he was about to take another step in, rough fingers brushed past his lips, sending shivers down his spine. He looked to his side, the culprit of those rough fingers was putting out Hijikata’s cigarette. Following them up to the owner, who committed this obscene act of putting away a perfectly lit cigarette. Hijikata was met with red eyes piercing right into his soul, and hair so silver that it could rival the moon. For a second, it seemed like time froze.

Like he had that night near the end of the war when he had suggested seppuku. When somehow, the hordes of Amanto had become mounds of corpses in the mud and the smoky air was still, and they had thought they were the only ones left.
When Katsura had fallen to his knees in the rust-coloured mud of the battlefield, shaking so badly he couldn’t get up.
Gin looked at him for a moment, then wordlessly tugged on his hand, pulling him forwards so that he could wrap his arms around him and tuck his chin over Katsura’s shoulder, because all that blood and cold mud would soak into his clothes and he’d never escape it, if someone didn’t pull him out.

After the escape from Takasugi's ship, Gin and Katsura discuss the state of their old comrade, which inevitably leads to discussing other parts of the past.
