“I know why you left, Newt, I read it in your letter and I understand, I just– I was still hurt because I didn’t know how to keep on going without you, I spent countless nights wishing you had stayed, laying awake and only hoping you were okay.”
“Before the virus took over, that’s what I did as well.” Newt finally speaks up after a few minutes of silence, offering Thomas a tiny smile when he looks at him. “I laid awake and wondered how you were, wishing on stars that wherever you were, you were alive and safe.”
“I guess even while being apart, we still somehow found our way back to each other, didn’t we?” Thomas whispers and glances up at the stars above them. “We laid under the same stars, wishing on them that the other was okay.”
(or, a universe, where Newt leaves before they rescue Minho because he doesn't want to hurt the people he cares about the most, and then, when Thomas thinks that everything is hopeless, they still find their way back to each other.)
