This is for the Saemaji Week JimaJimaMatsuri over on twitter. Day 3 prompt I chose was "flower language." I've been playing Ishin lately and was really struck by how legitimately hostile Majima/Okita is to Kiryu/Ryoma at first. I was also deeply amused by the fact that it takes quite a while for Okita to warm up enough to kick it at ye olde time karaoke bar, but basically after the second that Nagakura/Saejima does the try-outs he's just ready to pal around and sing songs together. "Yo!" he says in his casual look, ready to sing and drink! I love this stupid game.

Anyway, what if the open hostility was about a little bit more than just not thinking Saito seemed particularly trustworthy?

“Really? We’re captains of the Shinsengumi. We don’t believe in ghost stories.” Saito hesitated, suddenly aware that everyone was looking at him, and far more seriously than he had anticipated. “... Do we?”

Okita looked at Nagakura from the corner of his eye, communicating a thousand words in a single glance. Then he made a low noise of agreement, pushed himself up to his feet, and headed back into the other room. He came back with a cloth bundle, setting it down in front of him as he sat before the fire. He unwrapped it to reveal several smaller bundles inside, two of which were opened to display an ink stone and a stick of crisp, black ink. Glancing up, he extended a hand, “Sake.”

    Summary

Even when he tried, Nagakura wasn’t sure he could remember a time when Okita wasn’t in his life.

He couldn’t recall exactly how their lives had collided together; each time they talked about it, one of them would spin a ridiculous tale, grander and grander with each mouthful of sake. Okita, a gangly young boy, had wrenched Nagakura from the mouth of a bear. Nagakura, rapidly growing, had found Okita tied to the supporting post of an ocean pier. Both of them claimed to have rescued the other from a pack of rabid wolves in the wilderness.

It didn’t matter how or why or when, just that they had.
