Here’s the thing about winning the Games: you never get to stop paying for what you did to survive.
If you’re lucky, they get bored of you. You get to go back to your District’s Victor’s Village, get to get addicted on morphling or alcohol and spend the rest of your life wasting away, each night visited by the sins of your past.
If you’re unlucky- well, you better pray that you’re lucky, because if you aren’t, there are two possibilities. Either you get to spend the rest of your miserable fucking life playing the part of the Capitol’s plaything, or you refuse to and get to see everyone you love die a miserable death.
Either way, there is no way out of the Arena. Every Victor learns this.
Even Victors like Josh Wheeler, whose win people think was a fluke. Everyone in the Capitol was betting on one of the Careers going into the Seventy First Games.
It turns out that Josh is one of the unlucky Victors. Go figure. District 12 has never been known for being the District of the luck.

The Apocalypse could not have happened at a worse time for Josh Wheeler. The day his dad died, the day after he had sex with his boyfriend for the first time, the night that he and Eli were on opposite sides of town due to Josh pushing Eli away because of his dad's death.
Josh Wheeler is not entirely sure how he ended up travelling the Apocalypse with Mona Lisa and Ms. Crumble- the only adult not to get turned into a Ghoulie- in his quest to find his boyfriend and save him, but when said Trio ends up helping him take down the Jocks, including Sam Dean and her second-in-command Wesley Fists, he can’t exactly argue.
(In which Sam is the leader of the Jocks, Wesley is her right-hand man, Mona is Sam's ex-girlfriend, a ronin trying to atone for her sins, Turbo has taken over the whole mall and is masquerading as Baron Triumph, Angelica is a ghoulie that no one can understand, Ms. Crumble adopts Mona and Josh as her sort-of kids, Eli is being held hostage by the Jocks like most of the school, and, well, Josh is still Josh, trying to find his boyfriend after the world has ended.
Welcome to the Apocalypse, kids. Things are a bit different this time around.)

Eli Cadashyan is a foolish kid- he fell in love with a boy who was in love with someone else. He’s a resourceful kid, who wanted to have more, to be more, and so made himself a kingdom out of knockoffs and a lifetime spent in department stores. He’s a brilliant kid, who engineered a way to protect his kingdom at the end of the world.
He’s a selfish kid- he wanted to keep his hoard as three loners begged him to give them sanctuary. He’s a selfless kid- he let them all come to live in his mall. He opened up his kingdom- and thus his heart- to all of the Daybreakers, the refugees.
He’s a flawed kid- he protested, at first. He tried to kill Josh when Wesley couldn’t work up the guts to. He insulted Josh’s leadership again and again, when he was just trying his best to be leader. He’s a good kid- he redid Ms. Crumbles and Angelica’s hair and makeup. He helped them all fight the Jocks and the Ghoulies. He helped Josh infiltrate the school (sorta).
Eli Cardashyan is a kid. He’s a kid who’s made mistakes and tried to make some of them right. He’s a kid who ended up gaining himself a home and a family when the world ended.
And he's a kid who's not gonna die because of fucking Jayden Hoyles.
