“O-Of course it’s not over!” Monokuma sputters. “Just because I can’t execute you all here—that doesn’t mean it’s over! In fact, your stupid promise means that the game is just going to continue!”
“No,” Kaito insists, turning on Monokuma. “Even if the audience lets it happen—even if you refuse to let the game end here—nobody else here is going to kill. Because they know the truth now! And the truth is that you’re full of sh—”
Kaito doesn’t get to the end of the expletive; his voice cracks on that last word, and his eyes suddenly go wide, the only warning before he bursts into painful-sounding, sputtering coughs, spraying neon pink blood all over the front of his shirt. His knees wobble, and he claps his hands over his face, hacking into his palms.
“Momota-kun!” Shuichi cries.

Shuichi catches on and helps Kaito fool the mastermind. In the end, it doesn't change much.

“Sheesh, as I was saying!” Monokuma flails his arms. “Momota-kun and Shirogane-san seem to have come down with an oldie but a goodie—the despair disease!”
Monokuma’s announcement is regarded with empty stares from the whole group, aside from Tsumugi, who pushes on Gonta’s glasses and lets out a giggle, mumbling something about how he must be honoured to get to hold her. Gonta agrees thoughtlessly, nodding his head a little, but his gaze is still solely on the robot bear.
The silence is, as it so often is, broken by Kokichi. “Ooh, the despair disease!” He bounces forward with starry eyes, a broad smile on his face. “How exciting! Hey, Monokuma, do you wanna explain what that is to these peons, or should I?”
“You really know how to take the drama outta an announcement,” Monokuma grumbles.

After the second trial, Monokuma re-introduces a familiar motive for the third chapter: The Despair Disease.
Naturally, the consequences from this are immediate, and great.

Kaito makes an indignant sound. “I wasn’t gonna bug him, I wanted to see him! You know today’s hard for him just like I do.” He quiets, but Kokichi doesn’t say anything, so Rantaro guesses that he’s thinking something out. “I just… wanted to let him know I’m here.”
“Well, he knows you’re here!” Kokichi chirps, voice louder now. That’s Rantaro’s only warning before his bedroom door flies open, revealing the two of them, Kaito with one hand extended as though to stop Kokichi from barging in and Kokichi with his chest puffed out, a pleased grin on his face like he’s a cat that just got the cream. The light that enters his bedroom when the door opens is almost blinding; Rantaro winces when it hits his eyes, but manages a smile, especially seeing the concern in Kaito’s face.
“Hey there,” Rantaro greets, weakly. “Valuables are in the safe on the floor in my closet.”

Rantaro stays in on his birthday, haunted by his past (and a half-healed stab wound). Kaito and Kokichi swing by for a visit.

A moment later, the woman looks up, and despite Harukawa’s internal protestations, her teal eyes catch Harukawa’s. She smiles, and before Harukawa can make a break for it, she’s crossing the store, coming closer and closer until she’s standing just a foot away from Harukawa, eyes alight but soft, lips curved into a smile.
“Maki! What a surpri—”
“Don’t call me that,” Harukawa bites out on instinct. She chews the inside of her cheek and pretends not to see the hurt that flashes in Shirogane’s face. What did she expect, anyway? Harukawa’s hands come up to palm at a twintail that no longer exists. She betrayed me. She betrayed us all. Was I supposed to let her call me by my given name as though nothing happened? “What are you doing here?”
Shirogane glances down at her shopping basket, where there rests a stack of instant ramen packets and a single red apple. She looks up again with another, more crooked smile. “Grocery shopping?”
