With one last case under his belt, to wrap up the loose ends of his father's past, he could finally let go. This was not a new beginning for Dean, it was not progress, or the start of healing. It was the final piece to fall in place before Dean could leave this earth for good. It would feel right, complete. Sam had Eileen, Jody, Donna and the girls, even the apocalypse world gang. None of them needed Dean. They loved him, but they’d surely move on. It was time. Cas was diagnosed with Asperger’s syndrome when he was 8, since then, life has had its ups and downs, but the only constant in his life has always been Dean, his best friend and roommate. Sure, Dean can be a little infuriating sometimes and he is obsessed with cleaning the apartment, but he always listens to Cas and gives him space when he needs to be alone, he just knows him so well. Maybe that’s why Cas is so deeply in love with the guy (but of course nobody knows).
Dean has been in love with his best friend since he can remember, but since Cas has always said that he wasn’t born to have a couple, Dean has to settle with being his best friend and keep his feelings a secret. Now, at 23, Dean is thinking about his future, and he has decided that he needs to move on and start meeting new people.
Basically, this is the story of Cas, who has Asperger’s Syndrome, is in love with his best friend (but is afraid to be a burden so he keeps saying he doesn’t feel interested in people in that way) and Dean, who after years of unrequited love from Cas, has decided to start dating.
