Summary
In a universe where Garak remains the perfect instrument of the Obsidian Order, Julian Bashir becomes an exile. Cardassia Prime is the last place anyone would expect him to survive—and the first place that might break him.
Fleeing the Federation under the shadow of treason, Julian’s desperate escape lands him in the heart of Cardassian power. Enabran Tain, the master puppeteer of the Obsidian Order, has taken an interest in the young doctor—an interest that binds him to Garak, Tain’s most loyal operative.
But loyalty on Cardassia is a weapon as much as a virtue, and Garak is as much interrogator as savior. As Julian fights to retain his humanity, the truths he uncovers may cost him the very thing he’s struggling to keep.
In the labyrinth of Cardassian intrigue, survival is only the beginning. To endure, Julian must decide: is he willing to become the monster they expect—or something far worse?

Summary
The time has come for Enabran Tain's housekeeper's son, Elim, to return to school for the First Day of his Third Year, and Elim does not want to go. There will be a new Te'alakec, a new classroom, new students, and probably new rules and new expectations. Worse, Ja'ad Enabran told Elim he expected him to behave appropriately so that he won't have to hear from either of Elim's Te'alakeci prior to the initial Assessment – and Te'alakec Keril told all of the students that he hoped to send a letter to every family, informing each torj'kec's parent or guardian of the student's success.
But the only way Elim can think of to meet Ja'ad's expectations and Te'alakec Keril's expectations is to not be noticed. He must be silent unless spoken to; complete all of his work timely and in such a way as to draw no attention to his work. His work must be nearly accurate, but not entirely so; it must essentially meet expectations, without exceeding any expectations.
Elim knows this will be a truly difficult year.
He does not know if he will succeed.

Summary
Enabran Tain, while reviewing his housekeeper's son's school records, learns that the child's claustrophobia has been formally documented on his official record. It will not do for a child living under his roof to have such a noticeable weakness; it is his responsibility to teach the child to tolerate small, dark places. What better way to do so than to take him to visit the Kova'ari Caverns? Elim, on the other hand, does not want to visit such a place – but he has no choice, and he might be able to see regnars, on the journey to the caverns, or on the journey back home.

He wants to explore the desert of the Mekar Wilderness and look for regnars. But that is not the reason Tain, Mila, or Tolan are bringing him to the Wilderness. Elim knew it takes patience to find a regnar; they are very skilled at hiding. He did not know just how much patience it would take to wait for the opportunity to explore the desert and search for them.
