Summary
Jiang Cheng, Sect Leader of the Jiang Clan of Yunmeng, was arranged into a marriage by his parents a few years back, back before the wens attacked the peace of Lotus Pier and burnt it down, killing his only family, leaving only him and his older sister, along with his Martial Brother, Wei Wuxian.
The marriage was postponed, and offered to be annulled, but Jiang Cheng, with his stupid crush on the first son of the Lan Clan, Lan Xichen, agreed to keep the marriage going.

Jin Guangyao died early with his crimes being unearthed, Lan Xichen mourning for his love, as Jiang Cheng is forced to watch his husband mourn for another, love another, knowing it would never be him. After all, a Lan only loves once.

But in the small moments, between the mysteries and the grief and the intrigue of his first months back in the world of the living, he learns to love life again, to build around sorrow - the way the sunlight dapples through the tree branches, the soft warmth of blankets in the morning, the rain on the roof. The way Lan Wangji's mouth moves when he says his name, the feeling of his fingers when their hands brush, the warmth of his body when they walk close. And, eventually, when it's time, the softness of his lips.

Summary
Wei Wuxian had insisted it was all his own fault - his own carelessness caused his misfortune on their mission. According to him, Lan Wangji was ‘babysitting’ while Wei Wuxain was tasked with collecting medicinal berries from the forests. Wei Wuxian had been goofing around, and not paying attention to his duty, and grabbed thoughtlessly at a poisonous patch without looking.
Later, Lan Wangji had confessed another version of the story to his family. One that involved his ribbon being suddenly caught in a mess of bramble thorns. The youth had been so upset at his Lan ribbon being snatched away from him, that he acted without control. Wei Wuxain had intervened, batting the other youth's hand away from a vicious thicket of brambles, taking the curse for himself in place of the boy he loved to tease.
Teenage Wei Wuxian is sick. In his feverish state, he doesn't recognize that the person caring for him is Lan Wangji.
