Matilda was off to the side, rubbing her head (she must have hit it on something), Kat was on the ground next to him, and Rip Van Winkle was rubbing his eyes as he woke up, back against the wall. The last observation made him doubt his original theory that a year had passed, but then he saw Brom still on the floor (why would he still be here if a year had passed?), and he knew– something hadn't worked."

Matilda of the Somnus Bishops and Abraham "Brom Bones" Van Brunt, heir to the Duchy of Somnus Hollow, have been betrothed in a surprise arrangement by Brom's father, and Matilda's parents/leaders of her religion. Both are surprised, due to their families' long-term animosity, though they both hope for better. They must decide how they want their marriage to go or risk the shaky peace between their families escalating to a power struggle that would threaten their whole community.
