The ride back to Alex’s house is long and quiet, and Michael can’t help letting his eyes drift closed, the soft thrum of Alex’s engine and the warm comforting weight of his hand on his thigh lulling him into a dreamless sleep.
When he wakes some time later to a gentle touch against his cheek, Michael opens his eyes to see Alex watching him from the driver’s seat with an inscrutable expression, the car already parked in his driveway.
“Hey,” Alex says, voice soft and patient. “You ready to go in?”

“Mikey,” Isobel says, happy, her lips stretched into a big smile, “I’m so glad you’re here.” She slides into the truck, immediately scooting as close as possible and throwing an arm around his shoulders.
One of Michael’s hands leave the steering wheel as he leans into the hug, wrapping his arm around her, “Wouldn’t miss one of your famous parties for anything in the world,” he says, somewhat teasing. “And Max’s marriage, I guess.”
She hums, presses a kiss to his cheek before sliding away and putting on her seatbelt, “Don’t let Max hear you say that, he’ll revoke Best Man status,” she says.

Max takes drunk and battered Michael to work on a vehicle in the desert. The vehicle belongs to the military and Alex Manes is driving it. It's been 4 years since the last time Michael saw Alex. Michael cannot keep it together around Alex and Alex gifts him the dog tags from around his neck, citing that he's a non-combatant and doesn't need them. Years later, Gregory Manes knocks some facts about dog tags into Michael when he finds Alex's tags on Michael's rearview mirror. Michael learns to cherish Alex even more. Also, someone forgot to bring Alex's favorite pie topping to the Christmas party and Michael isn't having it. (And Alex reacts to Michael and the dog tags after dinner for a touching moment that's an angst/fluff frenzy.)
