Summary
“Gil has made the executive order that I have to get little trees. And that I must be accompanied,” Dani adds, rolling her eyes again. She had been pissed when he made that rule, though she never minded JT and Tally coming out with her. “So. Here we are.”
When she looks back at Bright, he's grinning so wide that it has to hurt. “What?” Dani asks, laughing a little.
“Nothing!” Bright laughs back, ducking his head. “Nothing at all. I just can't believe that I'm on babysitting duty this time around,” he says, grinning even harder at her. “That's all.”
“It is not babysitting,” Dani scoffs, glaring at him. She can't quite stomp down her smile. “You know what?” She starts, grinning at the vaguely fearful look written all over Bright's face. “You can go sit in the car.”
Bright immediately pouts at her, and Dani can only roll her eyes at how hard he's pretending to be upset. “I'm not doing that,” he announces. “It's almost Christmas. Where's your holiday spirit?”
“Hm, I dunno,” Dani offers, arching an eyebrow at him. “Do you usually get visited by the Ghost of Christmas Past?”

Summary
Dani isn't a good friend, and neither is Malcolm Bright.
It works. They work well enough. She doesn’t know how to be a friend or to have a friend, especially not a “friend” like Bright. Dani doesn’t mind him, and it’s clear enough that he doesn’t mind her. Whatever they have is unconventional, just like everything else about Bright. It’s all unconventional, he’s unconventional, this entire whatever between them is fucking ridiculous, and Dani likes it. She’s sure half of it has to stem from the fact that she thrives in environments like this.
Any place that’s out of the norm is a good enough place for her. Comfortability and stability are two words that Dani rarely shares a space with. The ever-changing everything with Malcolm Bright works well for her. She’s used to this. The warm familiarity is where things start getting uncomfortable for her.
Bright's good at keeping that all very much so at bay.
(or, dani isn't good at friends. bright's even worse. they make it work well enough)

Summary
“Listen,” Bright immediately starts, a very obvious fake tone of indignance in his voice. Dani can see him fighting a smile — the corners of his lips keep turning upwards. “It's not my fault, okay? Serial killer father, remember?”
“Yeah, no, I remember,” Dani helpfully assures him. “I don't exactly think that's an excuse for this, though.”
“Oh, no, it is,” Bright equally helpfully assures her back. Dani can't help but roll her eyes at him all over again. “I think it's a good excuse for practically everything. A serial killer father tends to do more damage to your psyche than you'd think. My trauma surrounding boxed pancake mix is not to be understated, Detective Powell.”
Dani laughs, ducking her head when she does. She can't help but grin at him, raising an eyebrow. “You're trying out jokes again?”
“Depends,” Bright says, beaming back. “Was that a pity laugh?”

Summary
“You forgot your coat at the office. And I’m sure your mother arranged a nice, warm, chauffeured ride home, but--” Dani shrugged, trying to come off as casual. “Knowing you, you’re the definition of Murphy’s Law.”
“Murphy’s actual Law has a little more wiggle room than that,” Malcolm protested.
“Yeah, well, I’m not a mathematician, and so far, he’s not wrong.” Dani stepped forward, the same knowing gaze from earlier sweeping over Malcolm. “You’re shaking.”
Malcolm held up his tremor hand. “I do that.”
“How much longer are you gonna try to lie to me, Bright?” Dani asked, closing the gap between them. Her fingers wrapped loosely around Malcolm’s wrist, seeking out his hammering pulse. “I’m already here,” she said softly. “You might as well let me help you. I’ve done it before.”

Malcolm gets the satisfaction of solving a case, for the low price of three sleepless nights and a stab wound.
Dani doesn't think he got that much of a bargain.

Martin entered with his toothy, sharp smile, Malcolm's greatest monster clad in his usual soft attire, off-leash and un-handcuffed and so much more dangerous than Malcolm knew the warm smile on his face implied he was, and the wild fear that spread through him at that moment shook him to his core.
Set directly after Impossible, the Surgeon is out, and Malcolm's not having a good time. Formerly titled 'Dad's Got You'.

Summary
Malcolm plans to meet his little sister for coffee and a stroll through the park after his recent dismissal from the FBI and rather abrupt return to NYC. He just so happens to come across a woman who's far tenser than she should be, and a man who's leaning far too close into her personal space.
He can't in good conscious leave anyone in such a state, so he butts in. Turns out she had it handled, but he's completely fine to just sit back and watch everything unfold as her emotional support and fake boyfriend.
or,
Malcolm meets Dani before the crime scene in the pilot episode, and happens to stick around and watch while she's telling her (mentioned) Ex off.

Summary
Malcolm gets himself stabbed while on the hunt for their newest killer. He just sorta... well, fails to mention he's bleeding excessively when he finally finds Dani. He didn't mean to not tell, just, how're you supposed to mention to your team you've been stabbed?
Then, in true Malcolm Bright fashion, the hospital can't hold him back, and there's still a case to finish up-- the team's thrilled to see him (mostly). And, yeah, maybe all the teasing that comes along with checking himself out of the hospital early after nearly dying is warrented?

Summary
The latest case the team just finished up leaves Malcolm a bit more shaken than he'd care to admit. He doesn't want to be alone, so it's a good thing he's got company in the form of Sunshine. A sleepless night is much more bearable with his chittery little roommate.
As it turns out, Malcolm's not the only one shaken up. He'd never turn away a friend-- especially not after the depressive cloud that had followed them around the entirety of the case. Besides, he and Dani never did get around to that grilled cheese, did they? He really just hopes Dani doesn't mind Sunshine hanging around too.
This is pre-relationship, but it can be read as just Malcolm and Dani friendship, or pre-Brightwell.

Summary
Malcolm's life had never been sunshine and rainbows. That's literally just how it is after your father is arrested for murdering twenty-three (at least) people. It's the territory that comes with being the son of a notorious serial killer. All that said, Malcolm can easily say he'd never been shafted so hard on an investigation in his life; both metaphorically, and, well, physcially because he'd quite literally been shoved down an elevator shaft while persuing a shady figure.
In the end, Malcolm knows whats real, and what was a dream, but he still can't help getting lost in the parallels between them. Who would've thought falling three-stores would be one of the most traumatic, and eye-opening things in his life? Also, is there any chance he can have a lift to the hospital, because ouch?

Summary
“Secret Santa,” Dani says, but then gasps and throws a hand over her mouth. “You’re not supposed to know it’s me!” She lets out a giggle, then bats her hand in the air. “Come on!” She yells, holding her bottle in the air. “Let’s party!”
