Wei Wuxian stills his movement.
“What?” he asks with a frown and then glances at the woman in front of him, a dark expression on his face.
“Yeah, I regret to inform you, but we had to cancel your leave of absence. You are going to take care of a new case…and…you have been assigned a new partner,” the division chief explains.
“You people just randomly cut down on people’s days off. Splendid,” Wei Wuxian states, the bite of venom in his voice.

'Many of our art pieces are fragile,’ the third man says, no introduction as if one isn’t necessary. ‘Some over 1000 years old. What experience makes you suitable for this level of responsibility?’
Wei Ying is gone. Mind empty. He looks back at the man who had asked the question, and smiles, stalling for time, and he sees a slight raise of an eyebrow and it comes to him, then.
This is the man. From outside. Who’d sacked some poor dude and walked away without a backward glance. The pale blue shirt is stretched across his chest, muscular arms testing the fabric. His face is stone, not cruel, but unbothered. A cliff-face. No toehold.
In which it's been 16 years. Wei Ying may have forgotten, but Lan Zhan has not.

Wei Wuxian paced around him, laughing in delight, shocked that the talisman was working. Surely Wei Wuxian knew that Lan Wangji could break free if he wanted to, but he didn’t say anything about it. Wei Wuxian let him pretend. For that, Lan Wangji was grateful.
Lan Wangji is used to being alone. The Twin Jades of Gusu are essentially peerless, but his brother has a natural friendliness and easy way with people that he lacks. His loneliness is so constant that he can't even imagine it could be different. When Wei Wuxian uses a mind-control talisman on him to force him to stay and drink with him, it's just what he needs to allow himself a moment of connection.
The scene in which Wei Wuxian uses the mind-control talisman on Lan Zhan always creeped me out because of the consent issues, but also it makes no sense that such a powerful talisman exists and is just never used again. But what if it only worked because Lan Zhan wanted it to?
