“Hey, you in there?” Barney asked quietly, catching Lee’s eye.
“Something is.” Lee stared at the man before him, the worried look, the attempt at a crooked smile that made his heart hurt. “I don’t know if I should kiss you or fucking punch you,” Lee muttered. He looked up at the clear sky, a habit he’d formed since Barney– since he thought Barney had died– but the arsehole was right there. Right there. Lee’s fists bunched into fists rather than… the other option.
“Do I get a say in this?”
“No.” Lee glared and shoved at him, snarling with a new rush of energy– of anger. “No! You don’t get a fucking say!”--
Lee never expected to make it off that boat. He was supposed to die and the pain was supposed to stop, but he's alive, and his best friend is back from the dead, and somehow it still hurts.

Barney knew the exact moment he’d fucked up.
The crew needed a diversion to get into the isolated mansion undetected, and the rumours around their target, Miller, spoke to an element of ‘playing with his food’ that Barney fully intended to capitalise on. Deliberately getting caught to distract Miller’s whole operation should’ve made for a decent enough delay with minimal risk. Lee had complained about playing the bait, but he complained about everything, and it was just his usual annoyed complaining, not genuinely trying to fight Barney complaining.
The whole thing was fucking moot now.
It was the look in Miller’s icy eyes the second he walked into their holding cell that was the beginning of the end.
And now Miller dug a gun barrel into Lee’s temple.
